Arc'teryx Motus Neck Gaiter

Arc'teryx Motus Neck Gaiter 1

The Arc'teryx Motus Neck Gaiter weighs 25 grams and uses Phasic AR II polyester for moisture-wicking performance during high-output activities. I reach for this during cold-weather trail runs and ski touring when I need breathable face protection without the bulk of a full balaclava. The longer front panel extends higher for optional mouth and nose coverage, while the stretchy single-layer construction fits loosely around the neck to prevent restriction during hard breathing. Flatlocked seams eliminate chafing, and the Silvadur anti-odor treatment keeps it fresh across multiple uses.

How Does the Motus Compare to Other Arc'teryx Neck Protection?

The Motus falls between minimal-coverage options and warmer alternatives in Arc'teryx's lineup. Compared to the Motus Balaclava, which provides full head coverage at 45 grams, this neck gaiter strips away everything except essential neck and lower face protection. The balaclava works better for sustained cold exposure, but the gaiter excels during activities where body heat builds quickly, and head coverage becomes excessive.

Against the LEAF Cold WX Neck Gaiter, the differences become more pronounced. The LEAF version is made from 95% merino wool and weighs 55 grams, delivering significantly more warmth through natural fiber insulation. The Motus prioritizes moisture management through synthetic construction, making it superior for sweaty efforts where merino would retain dampness. The LEAF gaiter handles stationary cold better, while the Motus handles moving cold better.

The Rho Balaclava represents a warmer option that converts between balaclava and neck gaiter configurations. The Rho uses Polartec Power Stretch for more insulation than the Motus, trading breathability for thermal retention. During moderate-intensity activities in temperatures below 15°F, the Rho makes more sense. Above 20°F, the Motus prevents overheating with high output.

Does the Arc'teryx Motus Neck Gaiter Work for Running?

Yes, and running showcases its strengths. During morning runs between 20-35°F, the Motus blocks wind effectively while breathing freely enough to prevent moisture buildup. I pair it with the Motus Crew LS as a complete high-output system, with both pieces using the same Phasic AR II fabric for consistent moisture transport. The polyester construction pulls sweat away from my neck immediately, unlike cotton buffs that become damp and cold.

The longer front design matters during variable conditions. When the wind picks up or temperatures drop unexpectedly, I pull the front higher to cover my mouth and nose without adjusting anything else. The breathable fabric allows air to pass through during hard efforts rather than trapping exhaled moisture like sealed face coverings. The quick-drying properties mean I can wear it for consecutive runs without washing, though the anti-odor treatment prevents funk accumulation.

What Makes Phasic AR II Different?

Phasic AR II uses a polyester knit engineered for active moisture management. The fabric stretches naturally without feeling restrictive, and the mechanical stretch recovers quickly. The smooth finish prevents irritation during long activities, while the tight knit blocks wind effectively.

The single-layer construction keeps the gaiter packable for easy storage. Made in Vietnam and priced at $29, it costs less than merino alternatives while performing better during high-sweat activities.

When Should I Use the Motus Neck Gaiter?

I grab this for trail running, cross-country skiing, winter hiking, and ski touring when moisture management outweighs maximum warmth. The gaiter handles temperatures from 15-35°F effectively, though below 15°F I switch to warmer options or layer with a balaclava for extended cold exposure. For casual wear, the athletic cut and printed logo maintain a technical appearance without looking overly sporty.

Available in Black, Muse Heather, Enigma Heather, Momentum Heather, and Figment Heather. The one-size-fits-all design accommodates different neck sizes through stretchy fabric.
